Psychedelic Preparation
Psychedelic experiences have an extraordinary capacity to illuminate — to surface what's been hidden, loosen what's been stuck, and open what's been closed. But illumination alone doesn't create change.
How you prepare determines how deep the roots of change can grow.
Why Preparation Matters
There's a saying in psychedelic practice: one hour of preparation is worth four hours of integration. It sounds like a ratio, but it points to something more fundamental — that what you bring to a psychedelic experience shapes everything that unfolds within it, and everything that becomes possible afterwards.
This isn't simply about setting intentions on paper. Psychedelics work by temporarily relaxing the brain's deeply held predictive patterns — the fixed beliefs, the defensive structures, the survival strategies that ordinarily keep experience within familiar bounds. This window of relaxed prediction is extraordinary. It's also brief. And what you're able to meet within it depends enormously on how prepared your whole system is to receive it.
A nervous system that is dysregulated, a psyche that hasn't been given space to surface what it's carrying, a body that hasn't been resourced — these don't disappear when the experience begins. They shape it. They determine whether the opening becomes transformation or overwhelm, whether what surfaces can be integrated or simply adds to what's already being held.
Preparation is the work of getting your whole system ready. Not to control the experience — psychedelics resist control, and that's part of their power. But to meet it with as much presence, groundedness, and capacity as possible. To ensure that when the window opens, you're genuinely able to step through it.
This is also harm reduction in the deepest sense. Not a checklist of dos and don'ts, but a genuine investment in your safety, your readiness, and your ability to work with whatever arises — including the difficult, the unexpected, and the confronting.
What Preparation Actually Involves…
No two people arrive at a psychedelic experience the same way. Different histories, different nervous systems, different relationships with spirituality, with the body, with uncertainty. Different things being carried. Different things being hoped for. The key, as they say, is different for every lock — and preparation honours that.
Rather than following a fixed protocol, preparation at Numinosity is a collaborative, whole-person process. We work across six dimensions of your life and experience — from your nervous system and your body, to your beliefs, your relationships, your sense of meaning and purpose. What receives attention in your preparation depends on what you're bringing, what you're hoping for, and what the work reveals as we go.
That said, there are threads that run through every preparation process:
Understanding the terrain What does a psychedelic experience actually involve — physiologically, psychologically, spiritually? What might arise, and how do you work with it when it does? Psychoeducation & building your knowledge will reduce fear and help build genuine readiness.
Preparing your body & nervous system Your nervous system is the ground you'll be working from. Together we'll look at how to resource and regulate it in the lead-up to your experience, alongside the practical physiological foundations — sleep, movement, nutrition, and reducing substances — that meaningfully support your brain's capacity to receive and integrate what arises.
Intention and inner landscape Not a wish list, but a genuine enquiry into what is present — what you're carrying, what you're hoping for, what you might be avoiding. Intentions that emerge from honest self-inquiry create a different kind of journey than those written from the surface.
Practical and harm reduction considerations Screening for contraindications, understanding interactions with medications, discussing the context of your experience and what support structures you have in place. This is care, not bureaucracy.
Relational preparation The relationships we inhabit shape the container we bring to an experience. We explore current dynamics — with partners, family, friends, and work — and consider who in your life needs to know about your experience, how to have those conversations, and what support structures need to be in place before, during, and after your journey.
Environmental preparation Set and setting extend beyond the ceremony itself. We consider the space you inhabit day to day — reducing exposure to environmental stressors and toxins where possible, and creating conditions of calm, reduced distraction, and sensory ease in the lead-up to your experience.
Cultural and worldview integration Your background, your relationship with spirituality, your beliefs about consciousness and healing — these aren't separate from the experience. They're part of how you'll meet it. Preparation makes space to explore and honour them.

A Note on Safety and Suitability
Psychedelic experiences are powerful and not appropriate for everyone. If you are currently taking SSRIs, antipsychotics, or other psychiatric medications, have a personal or family history of psychosis or certain other mental health conditions, or are in a period of acute crisis, it is essential to seek medical advice before considering a psychedelic experience. This is something we can explore together on a Clarity Call, and I will always refer you to an appropriate medical professional where needed.
This is coaching and wellness support — not clinical treatment. Your safety is the foundation everything else is built on.
Preparation support is for anyone who is taking a psychedelic experience seriously — whether that means you're still weighing whether this path is right for you, or you've already committed and want to go in as well-resourced as possible.
You might be in the right place if:
You're curious about psilocybin or ayahuasca but have questions, reservations, or simply want to understand more before deciding
You have an experience arranged and want to ensure you're genuinely ready — not just logistically, but psychologically, somatically, and spiritually
You've had psychedelic experiences before but feel you didn't get as much from them as you might have — and want to approach the next one differently
You're drawn to the potential of this work but want to feel held and informed rather than going in alone
Plant Medicines: Psilocybin & Ayahuasca
These are the medicines at the heart of this work — and while the principles of good preparation apply to both, each carries its own character, its own lineage, and its own particular demands.
Psilocybin
Psilocybin has been used for centuries across Mesoamerican traditions as a sacred tool for healing and divination — a lineage that deserves acknowledgement however the modern context of your experience may differ. Today it is encountered in many forms: private ceremony, retreat, clinical setting, or more personal contexts. Whatever the container, the medicine has a way of surfacing what is ready to be seen — emotional material, old patterns, deep questions. Preparation helps ensure you're meeting that with openness rather than resistance, and with the inner resources to work with whatever arises.
Ayahuasca
Ayahuasca is a ceremonial medicine rooted in the indigenous traditions of the Amazon — a living lineage that continues to hold and transmit this work today. Its preparation is accordingly more involved. The dieta — a period of dietary, physical, and often spiritual discipline in the weeks before ceremony — is not incidental to the experience but part of it, beginning the process of clearing and opening before the medicine is ever taken. Ayahuasca tends to work with depth and intensity, and arriving well-prepared — physically, psychologically, and spiritually — makes a genuine difference to what becomes possible within the ceremony.
A note on specific preparation guidance
The preparation you'll be asked to do will be shaped by where you're going, what medicine or practice you'll be working with, and who's holding the space. An ayahuasca retreat, a psilocybin ceremony, and a breathwork immersion each carry their own requirements — and the people facilitating your experience will give you specific guidance to follow. What we're exploring here are the principles that tend to matter across all of these contexts, the things worth attending to regardless of which path you're on.
